Bengal Boat Model Exhibit

Model of a sewn-planked, lug-rigged double-ended Bengali boat on display at Tarani Majhir Ghat, Salt Lake Stadium (Photo courtesy Swarap Bhattacharyya. Click to enlarge.)
Swarup Bhattacharyya maintains a fine blog, Noukoghar: Abode of Bengal Boat. Hes written to draw attention to his latest post, about a great little exhibit of Bengali boat models at the Tarani Majhir Ghat, Salt Lake Stadium, organized by the intriguingly-named "Backward Classes Welfare Department, Govt. of West Bengal." Swarups post has nice photos depicting a variety of interesting native craft -- I only wish there was some detail about the models and the boats they represent.

Duck Hunting Boats And Boat Plans

Duck hunting is a relaxing and gratifying approach to take pleasure in the outdoors. Being effective needs real patience, to be nevertheless and quiet waiting for the ducks to touch down, a good eye for that shot and invariably, persistence in dismissing the often seeping cold.

Wonderful talent can also be necessary. Choosing the right size and kind of decoy, siting them appropriately - which means reading and noting wind conditions. Shotguns need to be cautiously cleaned and shot kept in very good shape and on hand.

The triumph is usually to bag trophies. With ducks this will likely be not as well numerous, to avoid overkill, and not as well few. Sufficient to know that ones time and talent is vindicated.

The hull of duck hunting boats is almost flat. The truth is some argue that probably the most effective duck hunts undertaken are from layout boats and that the skill involved in this kind of water-fowling will soon cease to exist.

The layout boat has a very low profile, lying close for the water. Each boat and hunter being effectively camouflaged, hunting takes place in the middle in the lake where the decoys have currently been meticulously laid out. The hunter lies down, almost flat, with space for him to be able to sit up and take a shot in the acceptable moment. Understand that most duck hunts take component in winter so accurate dedication to this art is essential to comply with the practice.

Non Ugly Drop Boards

Outside, Huntington Bay is frozen and old man Winter is standing just offshore, sending storm after storm winging their way across the now white and frozen hills of Long Island; but down in my basement workshop, its warm and Im pressing forward with my list of boatbuilding chores.

Even small boats like the Blue Moon are too big to tackle all at once, so each year I try to choose the part of the boat most in need of care. Two years ago, it was the sails and rigging. Last year, it was the cabin. This year, its the deck, and boy does it need it.

The Blue Moons decks have always been a problem. They are 3/4" marine plywood over laminated deck beams, so they are plenty strong, but the Original Builder made no effort to protect the surface of the plywood, other than many (many) coats of oil paint.

That probably would have been good enough if it had been maintained properly. By the time we took over, though, shed been baking in the hot Florida sun for several years. The paint was cracked, which let in water... you get the idea.

The worst section was the starboard side deck, which Helena was working on, back in 2010, in the photo below. We took that down to bare wood, filled the cracks with epoxy, then primed and painted with a modern marine paint. That has kept her going for the last few years, but that starboard side deck is still problematical, and the rest of it again needs some serious TLC.

There are also a number of leaks in the deck which have been plaguing me since Day 1. I want to eliminate those if I can.

Helena, hard at work back in 2010. Loooove that green color!
So, the big job for this spring is to redo the deck, anchor well, and cockpit in a way that will keep her looking good, longer, and minimize the amount of repainting I have to do every year.

For the deck and cabin top, I plan to take her back down to the bare wood, then fiberglass the surface, finishing it off with 3 coats of a good paint like Kirby, adding pumice as a non-skid material in the final coat.

The fiberglass will hopefully eliminate the leaks and provide a stable surface for the paint. I will be using the Gougeon Book (page 351) as my bible for this project.

For the anchor well and cockpit, I plan to use another idea I found in the Gougeon Book: the teak veneer deck system (page 351). In a nutshell, I will cover the cockpit seats and the anchor well with teak veneer, which will provide an attractive, non-skid surface, as well as drastically reducing the amount of work needed to keep it looking good.

Im also going to build a sturdy teak grate for the cockpit well, which will again improve the looks greatly and eliminate the constant problem of wet feet. Because the scuppers in the well are 1/4" higher than the floor, theres always a bit of water sloshing around in the well. No more than a few ounces, but enough to be annoying. The teak grate will finally get my poor feet out of the wash.

I also want to replace my bowsprit and Samson post. Long time readers will remember that I had to lop a foot off the end of my bowsprit somewhere back in North Carolina. Ever since, the spar has been too short for its stainless steel whisker stays. Ive been making do with rope stays, but its time to replace the sprit. After building my curved boomkins, the straight bowsprit should be a snap. I plan to varnish the new sprit and Sampson post, to match the boomkin. Should look great when Im done.

The tiny Blue Moon has 8 opening portholes that are black and green with age. Since I first boarded her, back on the Steinhatchee River, Ive been wondering if underneath all that crud is a golden bronze ready to be brought back to its original splendor. Im going to spend at least one day this spring polishing one of those ports to find out.

Finally, I need to replace my companionway drop board. The current one is made from painted plywood and the paint is so ugly and cracked that Helena refuses to even touch it. The only word for it is Eew!

In a hurry to get started, I decided to use some scrap wood I had around to make the two drop boards. I thought I had more pictures of the process, but I guess I was too busy to take them. In a nutshell, I planed some scrap poplar down so it was thin enough to fit the drop board track (about 1/2"), and then used the old drop board as a pattern.

New drop boards

To help keep water out of the boat, I cut rabbets in each board, where they join.

Rabbeted joint
The only other tricky bit was cutting the slot for an eyebolt that sticks through the board to receive a padlock.

Marking location of slot

While test-fitting the boards on the Blue Moon, I slid the hatch shut until the eyebolt was against the board, and drew the outline of a slot that would take it.

I then drilled two holes at either end of the slot, to locate the ends of the slot.

Then it was a simple matter to cut the rest out with a coping saw.

Cutting the rest of the waste from the slot
I dont know why, but cutting this slot out was very satisfying.

Slot, cut.
And here are the boards, installed for a test fitting. If you click on the photo for a closer view, you will see why Im itching to paint!

A perfect fit... Amazing.
To be honest, Im not particularly happy with the look of the poplar, but it will do for now. Ill give it a good varnishing and it should last me until I have a more attractive piece of scrap wood lying around on a snowy winter day.

Aluminum Fishing Boat

Aluminum Fishing Boat

Small lightweight and, durable trailer boats made of aluminum are most often used for freshwater fishing. Generally very simple craft, featuring riveted or welded aluminum hulls and bench seating, they can be operated in fish-friendly places - shallow water, coves, inlets - not many other boats can reach. Powered primarily by outboard engines, this type of boat offers both tiller and remote steering options.

Pocket Yacht Palooza

Yesterday we had a great time at the first ever Pocket Yacht Palooza.  The Palooza was a one-day show celebrating smaller rowing and sailing boats, co-sponsored by the Port Townsend Pocket Yachters, the Small Craft Skills Academy and Northwest Maritime Center. Id like to extend a special thanks to Marty Loken for organizing this event.

With over 50 boats signed up, there was quite a variety to see.  Here are some examples. My apologies for the brief descriptions and for all the ones I neglected to include.

This is  Rogers restoration project, the 16 Nooka Rose featuring a 55 sq ft sprit rig. A work in progress aquired 3 years ago, Rogers objective is to simply catch up on 15 years or so of deferred maintenance, then replace the rub rails and breasthook. The boat features an experimental and interesting Cullar inspired rudder fashioned from a salvaged door, but Roger hung on to the original higher aspect rudder just in case.

This is Bobs boat "Duck", a Jim Michalak designed Scram Pram, featuring 300 pounds of water ballast in 3 tanks which makes it very stiff in a breeze. The birdwatcher style cabin keeps the crew dry in a chop and makes the boat self righting.

Next is Michaels Iain Oughtred designed 14-6" Whilly Boat "L Hirondelle"

Toms 15-8" Jonesport Peapod has a 65 sq ft spritsail and gets its lines from Am. Small Sailing Craft. The original of this Peapod was built in 1975 in cold-molded cedar. This boat came from a mold of the original.

This is Rogers 11-2" Joel White designed dinghy built by Roger in 2010.

This 11 150 lb Rich Kolin designed Heidi Skiff was built by the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding.

This is Richards "SASe", a 12 B&B yacht Amanda.  SASe stands for Solar Assisted Sail and Electric. The bimini top is actually two Solar panels that provide 45watts at 44 volts to power two torqeedo outboards and charge three 680 watt lithium ion batteries giving the boat unlimited range possibilities. The boat is also equipped with sail and oars.

A coolidge centerboard daysailor built and for sale by the NW School of Wooden Boatbuilding.

Nik & Elizabeths Ian Oughtred designed caledonia yawl "Sutil" built by Grapeview Point Boat Works in 2009. Glued lapstrake construction, sapele plywood, spruce spars, white oak floors and sales, Alaska yellow cedar floorboards and benches. Powered by oar, sail and Torqeedo electric outboard.

Chelcies charming 11-1" dinghy "Puff", inspired by George Holmes 1888 Ethel from Sail and Oar, scaled down to make her a shorter and lighter boat.

Randys Core Sound 17 should be familiar to many of you by now. Built by Jan Nikolaisen and featured in Small Craft Advisor magazine 2007-2008, issues 47, 49, 51-53.

Beautiful community-built Redfish Kayak (for sale - $5900)

John built this 17-6" adirondack guideboat in 2009, extended from the usual 15-16 for racing.  Strip built from patterns of a design that was built by William McCaffery, a hunting guide and hotel owner during the early 1900s in the Adirondack region of upstate New York.

Happy Scampers!

Andrews Bolger designed Bobcat "Bobs Cat", converted to a cruiser with a cabin and other modifications, recently purchased from Bob by Andrew to learn to sail.

Several others were on display on the beach and there for the Small Craft Skills Academy.

James McMullen demonstrating his new boom tent for Rowan

The first ever Pocket Yacht Palooza was a great success and Im sure it will become an annual event!

Update:  Many more nice photos from the Palooza can be found here.
